Of Gold and Shadows – Review – Aspiring to Live Blessed & Overcome with Excellence Blog & Shop

Of Gold and Shadows follows the ahead-of-her-time Miss Ami Dalton, an Egyptologist in 1888 Victorian England. She is hired by the wealthy Mr. Edmund Price to catalog and appraise his newly acquired Egyptian artifacts, which he plans to sell for profit. However, Mr. Price has a hidden agenda that Miss Dalton is unaware of—one that prevents him from selling the artifacts to the Cairo Museum, where they could be shared with their rightful people. It’s a story about two people from vastly different walks of life who grow closer and begin sharing their secrets.

I really enjoyed the story! It was mysterious, had a touch of humor, and the premise was so captivating. The concept behind it was fun, and I found myself fully engaged throughout. This was only the second book I’ve read by Michelle Griep, and so far, she has definitely not disappointed me.

The beginning felt a bit slow to me, but I understood it was setting up the character backgrounds. Once I made it through the first couple of chapters, I was hooked and had to know how the story would end. Michelle Griep has a fantastic way of blending a great narrative with a subtle history lesson. I also appreciated the small glossary at the end, which explained a few of the phrases she used. While I didn’t necessarily need it—since most terms were either defined or hinted at within the story itself—it was a nice touch.

Overall, I thought Of Gold and Shadows was a great pick for anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a touch of mystery. If you’re a fan of that combination, you’ll likely enjoy this story.
